If your pool contains a spa, you must check for water that is murky and milky. However, there is no need for concern as they are easily resolved with the correct treatment. Let us teach you spa cleaning and the steps necessary to restore the clarity of your spa water.
Cloudy Spa Water
The presence of cloudy spa water indicates the presence of microscopic particles that are too tiny to be touched and appear to be floating in the water. It is a reoccurring concern with several forms of water problems, including:
- Core levels that are unbalanced (disinfectant, PH, alkalinity)
- Cloudy water is more likely to have low disinfection levels.
- Suspended solids that are insoluble
- Organic waste, dead algae, and inadequate filtration
- Excessive usage causes an imbalance in core levels.
- aeration with nozzles activated
How to Fix Cloudy Spa Water
- Check your filter(s) for problems with the water quality, especially if the water isn’t clear. If the filters can’t catch small particles, it will be very hard to fix the problem. Get your filters, rinse them well, or put them in a filter cleaner for the night.
- Check the level of water. The water balance is your second stop. Check that the PH is right, and if it isn’t, change it. Make sure that the level of sanitizer is just right, neither too high nor too low. Keep in mind that high levels of sanitizer can make the water look cloudy.
- Surprising the spa. If you use a shock without chlorine, you can usually clear the water quickly without having to set the level of sanitizer too high. With a clean filter, the shock will get rid of the particles and, in most cases, solve the problem.
- Use something to make things clearer. A product like Spa Sparkle is like a flocculant in that it clumps all the small particles together to help the filter work better.
- Clear out the spa. It’s the last thing to try if none of the other things work. Drain the spa, use a pipe to flush the system, and then fill it with fresh water. Sometimes this is the best thing to do, especially after a lot of use (like after a party in the hot tub!).
Milky Spa Water
Spa water can often look like milk, which gives it a white tint and makes it hard to see the bottom of the hot tub. Things like cloudy spa happen when:
Core levels that aren’t even (sanitizer, PH, alkalinity). If the water looks milky, there may be too much disinfectant in it. Poor filtration of insoluble, suspended, dead algae and organic debris (dirty filters)
How to Fix Milky Spa Water and Make it Clear
- Look at the filters. Rinse them or put them in a filter cleaner for the night.

- Surprise the spa. If you use a shock without chlorine, you can usually clear the water quickly without having to set the level of sanitizer too high. Along with cleaning the filter, the shock will get rid of the particles and usually fix the problem.
- Use a clarifying agent to help the small particles stick together and make it easier to filter.
- Empty the spa. If nothing else works, drain the spa, flush the system with a pipe flush, and start over with fresh water. Sometimes this is the best thing to do, especially after a lot of use (like after a party in the hot tub!).
